cryptography

Definition
Mathematical science of reversible processes that can be used to alter coded information so that it is unintelligible. Cryptography uses an information "key," which is used to reverse the effects of the process and restore information to an intelligible state. There are two kinds of cryptography: symmetric, in which the key that locks the information is also the key that unlocks it; and asymmetric in which the key that locks the information is different from the key that unlocks it.
